Host countries on golden archery streak HOLD FOR JB 13 Aug. 2004
ATHENS, 13 August- Every host nation since the 1980 Olympic Games has won a gold medal in Archery.
Keto LOSABERIDZE began the tradition, taking gold in the women’s Individual event in Moscow. The Soviet Union had never before won a gold medal in Archery.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Darrell PACE (USA) won his second gold medal in the men's Individual event. He had previously won the event at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
At the 1988 Seoul Games, Korean archers swept three of four gold medals, losing only the men’ s Individual event. Soo-Nyung KIM (KOR) took the women’s Individual and Korea took both the men's and women's Team events.
Antonio VASQUEZ, Alfonso MENENDEZ and Juan HOLGADO of Spain won the gold medal in the men's Team event at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Spain had never won an Olympic medal in archery.
U.S. archer Justin HUISH continued the tradition by winning the gold medal in the men’s Individual event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The United States also won the men’s Team event.
Simon FAIRWEATHER won the first gold medal for Australia at the 2000 Sydney Games, which was also the country's first gold medal in archery. FAIRWEATHER will defend his title at the 2004 Athens Games.
Greek champion Evangelia PSARRA has a shot at continuing the tradition in Athens. She stands eighth after Thursday's Individual Ranking Round. She finished 18th at the 2003 world championships in New York.

Bhutan duo to make Olympic history 16 Aug. 2004
ATHENS, 16 August - For the first time in Olympic history there will be two archers from Bhutan competing in the 1/16 Elimination Round of the Archery competition.
The historic Panathinaiko Stadium will play host to the 1/16 Elimination Round of the Women’s competition from 08:30 before the Men take centre stage for their 1/16 Elimination Round from 15:30.
The biggest surprise is that there will be archers from Bhutan in both competitions.
Archery is the only Olympic sport in which Bhutan has ever taken part, sending athletes to every Olympic Games since 1984.
In five previous Olympic Games the Himilayan Kingdom, where archery is the national sport, has never had an archer make it through to the last 32, but tomorrow (17 August) both of its team members at ATHENS 2004 Games will compete for a place in the last 16.
Tshering CHOODEN, who is in her second Olympic Games and carried the Bhutan flag at the Opening Ceremony, will take on India’s Reena KUMARI at 08:57 in the Women’s 1/16 Elimination Round.
Tashi PELJOR’s next match in the Men’s competition 1/16 Elimination Round at 17:18 is against Anton RYLEPAV (UKR) who beat reigning Olympic champion Simon FAIRWEATHER (AUS) in the 1/32 Elimination Round.
